sandra gee observed: "May 12, 8:43am....Parent lands and almost immediately starts screeching and calling out. Not sure if any food was brought in, but the chick went right over and is now lying in wait....just in case. Which parent is this????
On the Cu the little one just shuggled and I think I could actually see real feathers starting on underedge of the wingtips. It looks to me that parent DID bring something into the nest and has...maybe a training session going on here....."you want it, come and work for it". The chick took a few bites, nibbled, walked over the the CU and is now back and feeding himself. Parent is overseeing this. I think this is Dad?????" |

lyndabird observed: "May 13, 2:05 pm PDT Dad has landed with a fish. Mom quickly jumps down takes the fish and starts to feed the eaglet, who has quickly made his way from the CU cam to the dining area. He's grabbing even large pieces from Mom and downing them very quickly. He's eaten quite a few larger pieces this time." gordon24freak observed: "May 13, 8:57 Kid is trying to snuggle under Mom, it's freaking Mom out. She is up, and back, and off balance, wings splayed too. Kid keeps on trying to get in under her. Poor babe, he wants to snuggle, and Mom is not playing his game." (Other observers noticed eaglet trying to snuggle under Dad earlier; it looked as if Dad did not want to cuddle.) |

Starr: "Dad brings fuzzy a live fish..puts the entire fish in his mouth..Fuzzy looked at dad , then drops the fish..so funny." link to Skipper's video trek observed: "May 15, 8:27 am Wow...Parent just landed with a good sized fish and plopped it right in front of the babe. Handed the whole thing to him. Now if this had been Big or Lil they would have had it eaten in one gulp but this babe picked it up..had it in his mouth and had no idea what to do with it. I saw him drop it and then I got the big boot.....parent refused to feed him as far as I can tell. I just saw the parent start digging in the nest and as it was doing this it lifted the fish..cast it aside and is just standing there with the fish between the babe and the parent.." trek observed: "May 15, 9:01 am Mom flies in with a big clump of grass in her talon. She does a hop and a what the?..and immediatly picks up the fish that dad left lying in the middle of the nest. She begins tearing it up and feeding the babe. Turned my head for a second and looked back and now she is fighting with a really floppy fish. This one looks bigger and may be another one? Perhaps one she brought in as well? Not sure. She is ripping away at that one and feeding bites to the babe who is just laying their watching everything unfold." |

Skipper: "May 16: Very unusual behaviour witnessed at about 8 p.m. tonight (at least I haven't seen it before). Not sure who is who so - An adult has just arrived at the nest. Other adult is feeding the kidlet. The adult on the branch hops down and steals the food from the kidlet Somebody lets out some loud squawks of protest (Soundguy?). Then one adult leaves and other one starts nestorations. Kidlet tries to snuggle and adult flies up to Mom's branch." link to Skipper's video Soundguy: "Very unusual, not just the behavior but the eagles vocalizing. I've never heard anything that even comes close to that before. Patched your clip into the 42" wide screen, and it looks like the eagle on the right was making that unusual sound. My initial human reaction was, that it sounded like an eagle protest without the loud screeching. Will have to study it again over coffee tomorrow morning. As usual, your capture timing is perfect. Thank you." Redrum: "I agree about the strange behaviour, that was definitely Ma on the branch, (great chance to see size/colour difference) flying down to rescue Pa from yet another disastrous feed. We all know, Pa's not the most resourceful feeder (bibs anyone?) and Ma just decided to take over. She didn't take anything from the kidlet, just the meal from Pa. The sounds of protest were definitely coming from Pa (on the right, matched his body language) and it sounded more like their whistling cries that they do, only louder and more earnest." jkr observed May 17: lyndabird observed: "May 17, 7:50 am PDT Interesting to note that you can see his primaries and secondaries coming in all along his wing, when you see him from behind, and not just the few at the wing tip that we saw previously." trek observed: "May 17, 9:31 am Parent arrives on the nest (mom I think) and at first it looked like she had brought in a fish but now it looks like she is carrying rodent? of some kind. It is round like a mouse. Mom immediatly offered what I thought was the fish to the babe who just looks like...you are kidding me right..and when the babe simply waits ..mom begins the feeding session..she also takes a few bites for herself. Then when she moved to the other side of the nest it looked like she was carrying a rodent and she is feeding that to the babe as well. Interesting little tug of war with the food. Mom is eating quite a few of the bits for herself and the babe is getting impatient with this. So babe is jumping in a bit to get it's share. Mom definitely got the bulk of it though. Pure speculation on my part...but I wonder if this will encourage the babe to be more independant about feeding itself. And eat bigger bites." sandra gee observed: "May 17, 9:30am PDT.....Chicklet seems to be standing up on his feet more today." |

Skipper: May 18 - This video is from yesterday. I noticed some differences in the kidlet's behaviour from what I had seen before so I put them together. Things I observed:

slickrock observed: "May 18, Watched some of the morning feed a few minutes ago and it looked like Fuzzlet was ripping some of his own pieces from whatever it was. He's definitely looking more independent. At one point the piece he got was too big (although he tried to stuff it down anyway) and the parent grabbed some of it to get it to a more manageable size for Fuzzy. After parent flew off Fuzzy did a little rearranging to get a comfy spot and it was very clear how strong his little legs are getting. He lost his balance and had to touch down with a wing a couple of times, but his legs are getting longer and he's stretching them them out when he walks around. He's such a cute little guy!" |
