AJL: "Fuzzy is going to start moving around more now; Mom and Dad will encourage him/her to move toward them for food, rather than providing cup-side service. The leg muscles begin to get a workout and his/her coordination will gradually improve. The sticks will be his bumpers." |

ostrich observed: "May 8, 7:10am eaglet time - The secondary down coat is now almost completely in - there is still a patch of white down on the head and in a strip down the back. The effect is like we now have a strange kind of avian skunk on the nest. LOL." |

ostrich observed: "May 9, 11:27 am eaglet time - Re: previous comments/questions about the eaglet being "lethargic" - I think it is very unlikely this is unusual/unexpected. Keep in mind that the growth rate of the bald eagle is incredibly fast - this means that almost all of the eaglet's energy has to be devoted right now to body growth. This will mean he's going to be either eating or resting most of the time. Of course, he can't be completely inert - there is some amount of development of muscles and coordination that has to happen. But other than that there's really not all that much for him to do right now other than for his body to fuel the huge growth spurt and development of plumage." |

link to Skipper's video "The Three Ps" Soundguy: "Skipper, Your 3P's video capture might include the first hint of the eaglet "flapping." Near the end of the clip, the chick is seen flapping its stubby undeveloped wings and looking up, presumably at its branched parent. Not sure if eaglets begin flapping at such a young age (18 days) but its movements strongly suggest it's beginning to mimic what it sees, the parent flying into a branch above the nest. Love to hear an analysis of your video capture from a biologist." |
