Look for return in mid to late April and eggs in early to mid May The male of this pair was lost in 2012, about the time the chicks were ready to fledge; humanizing slightly, the female took a deep breath, and assumed the role of provider for the chicks, and stayed with them until they were ready to migrate, as the male would normally do - earning her the unofficial title of super-mom. She returned in 2013 with a new mate. 2013 was another challenging year - there was a lot of rain starting the day after #3 hatched, and it began to pour late on June 19; the parents fed the chicks frequently between showers leading up to record-breaking rainfall June 19-20, followed by massive flooding; the cam went offline late on June 20 as power was cut to many parts of the city. The rivers were high and fast and murky for days, so even though all three chicks survived the rain, we feared there would not be food available to feed them, and the smallest especially would be unlikely to survive. On June 22 a local observer with a long lens on her camera was able to get a picture of the nest, showing both adults there, with one leaning over as if feeding - giving us hope that at least one chick survived, and letting us know they were able to find food. On June 26 an observer with binoculars saw two - and maybe three - heads popping up during a feeding. The next set of pictures a few days later clearly showed two healthy chicks, so we thought we'd lost the youngest - but on July 2 we could clearly see three little heads in the next set of pictures! And all 3 survived to fledge. |

Look for eggs in early-mid May no cam in 2013 There was a brief notice on their website: "August 29, 2013 - The Ospreys endured a successful season! One of the two chicks that hatched has developed into a nearly fully capable adult. We have been watching the goings on of the nest and are now waiting to say our final goodbyes." |

adults named Pinella (F) and Stirling (M) Sparky #3 likely died from lack of food; #2 may have died of natural causes or lack of food (he/she seemed less active the previous day) but might also have been taken by a predator; #1, named Sparky, died after being removed from the nest for banding - a necropsy is planned. Rest in peace, young ones. Look for eggs in early to mid January

Florida Ocean's Reach Osprey Cam |
Look for eggs in late December There were three eggs, but there were also other osprey trying to take over the nest; I don't have all the details - but the bottom line is that the nest failed. |
|||||
Look for return in mid-March and eggs in the first half of April When the cam was turned on in early March in anticipation of the return of the osprey, it was discovered that the nest had been taken over by a pair of great horned owls - perhaps the ones that predated the three osprey chicks last year. Arrival, egg laying and hatching dates are not know as there were two young owlets in the nest when the cam was activated; first fledge was April 7 and both fledged successfully. |

Maine Taste of Maine Restaurant |
Look for return in early April and eggs in mid to late April This cam was streamed by BioDiversity Research Institute until 2013, when the Taste of Maine Restaurant (where the cam is located) took over the management of the cam. The cam went offline partway through the nesting season, so information after June 29 is based on my visits to the restaurant, discussions with staff, and their facebook page. Two of the chicks were larger and probably female, and I tend to assume they're the older two, but it's actually possible that the smaller one was the middle chick. One of the larger ones died July 23-24 - all three were observed looking normal by staff on the 23rd, and when the person I spoke with looked at the monitor the morning of the 24th, one chick was lying dead in the nest with its wing over the side; my guess is that it was the oldest and may have misjudged a landing and broken its neck or something similarly fatal. Second fledge on July 25 is based on a picture of what appears to be a young osprey on the roof rack of a car - though it could have been an adult; the lighting is not good for ID purposes. On July 26 when I visited, the smaller chick was perched on the vertical pole that supports the nest and cam - sort of advanced branching - and the remaining larger chick was sitting in the nest - which is why I think the smaller one might be older; it also makes me wonder if either had fledged at that point, though I wasn't there all that long. |

Maryland Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge |
Look for return in mid to late March and eggs in mid to late April Starting June 8, only 1 egg was seen; weather was bad around that time, and this may be a new pair who left the nest for a while during the storm, but so far we don't know what happened to the other eggs. Friends of Blackwater reported that the chick died; they noted that the parents appeared to be inexperienced, but also noted that the chick wasn't as active as most, so may have had an underlying health issue. |

Look for return ?? and eggs in mid-April The chick was in the nest June 7 and was not there June 8; there was speculation that it was predated by a great horned owl, but I also observed three adults at the nest on June 8, so there's a chance the chick may have been caught in the middle of an attempted take-over of the nest. The adults acted as if they might be new pair, sometimes eating themselves rather than feeding the chick, and leaving the chick alone more than seemed normal for the age and stage - but that's not likely anything we'll ever know. Rest in peace, little one. |

Look for return in early to mid April and eggs in late April to early May adults Iris (named for unusual pattern in eye) & Stanley First two eggs were laid with a new male; then Stanley, the male from last year, returned on May 3 and destroyed both eggs; the third egg was laid during the transition from "new male" to Stanley and wasn't tended - and broke on May 7. The fourth and fifth eggs were Stanley's, and have been appropriately incubated by both adults. |

Look for return in early April and eggs in late April We think the female from last year returned; several males were seen on the nest, including one that looked like the male from last year. It looked as if the first egg or eggs were kicked out of the nest by one of the males, and we're not sure if the second set of eggs were destroyed by one of the males (an attempt was made) or abandoned by the female who had to fish for herself because none of the males brought her fish more than once or twice, though I don't know if one or more tried and was fended off by another male. A sad year for those of us watching. |

adults named Ethel and Oscar "little EO" Look for eggs in mid May Possibly a new female - the pair didn't nest last year, and only the male was seen for part of the year; only one egg has been seen (though the cam angle doesn't give a complete look into the nest bowl), and it has been left untended at times; we're hoping for the best. Against the odds, the solo egg hatched, and the adults were doing a good job feeding and brooding their new little chick (Dad bringing food, Mom doing the feeding and brooding); knowing that Mom might be new, we were happily surprised to see what a good job she did reaching little bits of fish down to the wobbly little chick. Sadly the chick disappeared late in the evening of June 29 - Mom had been brooding and got up for a brief stretch, and the chick wasn't seen again, leading some of us to think the little chick may have gotten tangled with Mom and fallen when Mom hopped to a branch - but we'll never know for sure. Rest in peace, little one. |

Look for return in early-mid April and eggs early to mid May Monty (M) & Glesni (new female 2013, replacing Nora) Clarach/Blue 2R (F) The nest was built in 2007 to attract osprey to the Dyfi estuary; it was occupied starting in 2008, but no breeding occurred until 2011 when Monty and new mate Nora successfully raised 3 chicks; Monty and Nora again laid 3 eggs in 2012 and all hatched, but sadly two of the chicks succumbed to the unusually heavy rains that spring; the remaining chick was briefly removed from the nest, dried off and warmed up, and survived to fledge. Nora did not return in 2013, and a 3-year-old female (band blue 12) became Monty's mate and was named Glesni |
