Look for return in early April and eggs in mid to late April

There was a torrential rain storm - 4-6 inches in less than 24 hours and almost 8 inches before it was over; Mom did her best to keep the chicks warm and dry, but it wasn't enough.

Rest in peace, little ones. ♥

No apparent cause for the loss of the youngest chick; there had been bad weather when it was very young which may have left it weakened, and it is hard for the smallest one to compete for food.

Rest in peace, young one.

Nisos, Zed & Rosie

The male was last seen at 6:47 pm on August 12, just before one of the worst hailstorms on record; he was an excellent provider over the years, so we believe he died in the storm. The female and chicks survived the storm, but no food was brought to the nest for the next two days - probably because the female's role is to feed the chicks the fish the male provides; the female spent a lot of time on the nest during those two days, while the recently fledged chicks practiced their flying skills. At 11:07 am on the morning of August 15, the female delivered a small fish to the nest; one chick arrived right before her, and ate the fish. Mom brought another fish at 6:14 pm, when all three chicks were on the nest, then a third at 9:13 pm. And from then on she became the sole provider for another month, becoming so proficient that she was sometimes able to eat the fish that were left over after the chicks had fed, and there were often leftovers after a meal.

2011 male may have disappeared -
not seen for a week or so before the last chick died in 2011

2012 - The two osprey chicks passed away on Sunday, July 15th.
After a large electrical storm, the male went missing and the female was there infrequently. The younger chick passed away in the nest and the older check went missing from the nest.

Capt. Kidd & Lola

No way to know which egg didn't hatch, but the three days before the third hatch suggests that might be egg #3 that didn't hatch

*Last reported sighting of three chicks was August 5, but there were cam issues so later visits by all three may have been missed; there were actually four chicks on the nest a couple of times on August 4 and 5 - so I suppose it's also possible that one of these chicks left with the neighbors.

The male either didn't return or disappeared after a brief visit; the female prepared the nest on her own, chasing off anyone who stopped by (not certain if some were potential suitors) and laying an almost certainly infertile egg; a new male appeared and brought her a fish on May 6, and while it took a bit of time, she accepted him as her new mate and they mated (or at least bonded) on May 8

An attempt was made to put transmitters on the chicks after they fledged (I think on August 1st), but none were caught.

All 3 chicks may have been in the area for a while after the last confirmed sighting; one observer thought he saw all three on August 10, but not at the same time so hard to confirm - and we know from other nests that one or more often learn it's safer to stay away from the nest, and beg fish from Dad near the river or wherever he fishes.

the Lady of the Loch (F) & green 7Y (M) Laddie (M)

the Lady is the oldest recorded breeding female in the UK (or possibly the world);
if she returns for the 2012 season, she will be 27 years old,
and 2012 will be her 22nd year at the Loch of the Lowes

Green 7Y did not return this spring, but a new unbanded male (nicknamed "Laddie") arrived on the nest shortly after the return of the Lady, and she accepted him as her mate.
