#1 vanished from nest - either fell out or was predated
#2 was killed by a crow or raven while the adult was off the nest
#3 was much smaller and couldn't compete for food

as of July 16 when the third chick died, the male had not been seen on the nest for almost a week (he brought a fish July 10); another male had been seen in the area, and they may have fought, or he may have been defending the nest and unable to fish

2010 pair was Bella and Benecio
new pair in 2011, possibly young
2011 pair is Bea and Jasper; very minimalist nest

chicks are MKD, TE and MT

Jasper was bringing sticks to the nest and accidentally picked up MT and carried him to the edge of the nest, and he fell to the ground; he didn't survive.

Great horned owls took over the nest, and laid two eggs which they subsequently lost, perhaps due to inexperience.

The waters of the local river have been at or near flood levels I think since the chicks hatched; the male has brought in some good fish - but there have been days with none. It's almost certain that C2 and C3 died from lack of food and the hydration it provides for osprey chicks.

Saco (F)
Pemi (M)
"Tiny2"

This was an unusual season because federally-mandated work on the dam began during the nesting time; the chicks took it in stride, but the adults stayed away from the nest during the day when the heavy construction was going on. The male did deliver fish some days, and the chicks learned to self-feed at a relatively young age - and there were usually food deliveries and feedings in the early morning and/or evenings. To add to the stress, the chicks were banded July 12, and the older two were fitted with transmitters. We were quite worried at first, but all three chicks survived to fledge. Unfortunately Pemi was good at flying but very unlucky with his landings. He missed his target and ended up in the water several times, and was rescued by the construction crew. Iain MacLeod from the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, a partner in Project Osprey Track, came to check him out, and took him home overnight to rest and be fed; he was in a safe place when Iain left, but unfortunately landed in heavy undergrowth and was killed by a predator (probably fox or coyote) while trapped there overnight.

Based on the transmitter data, Saco had several wonderful months of migration, safely dodging a hurricane as she left New Hampshire, and spending a month or so in West Virginia before continuing south. Unfortunately she fell victim to another hurricane as she tried to cross the Caribbean at the end of October.
Rest in peace, young one.

On August 27, Dad brought a fish to Tiny2 at the nest at 3:34 pm' Tiny2 claimed it and flew away with it. Tiny2 was back at the nest at 6 pm, did a bit of calling, and some flapping and pouncing, and then left at 6:10 pm. Another hurricane was approaching the nest on August 28, so perhaps they used the edge of the storm as Saco did to speed their migration.

Banding Day Information - July 12, 2011:
#1/Saco - female - 1,470 g (almost 3.25 lb)
#2/Pemi - male - weight?
#3 banded in the nest, not weighed or tested for gender

the Lady of the Loch (F) & green 7Y (M)

the Lady is the oldest recorded breeding female in the UK (or possibly the world);
she is 26 years old, and 2011 is her 21st year at the Loch of the Lowes

It appeared that the male might have been working on a new nest after the female left, apparently not uncommon when a pair has an unsuccessful season
