The parents were both hatched in the San Francisco Zoo (male K10 in 2001 and female K26 in 2002) and then fostered into nests on Catalina Island (K10 in the Twin Rocks Nest and K26 in the West End Nest). K26 laid two eggs in 2006 and two in 2007, one of which hatched each year. Their first chick was the female A49, known as Cruz. Cruz was the first eagle chick to hatch in the wild on the Channel Islands since 1949. The 2007 chick A63 was a male named Limuw, which is the Chumash name for Santa Cruz Island. Limuw died about 7 weeks after fledging; he was found by the side of the road in Nevada, probably hit by a car while scavenging roadkill. Cruz was on Santa Rosa (another of the northern Channel Islands) as of mid-November 2007 - you can follow her travels here. This nest has a streaming camera with sound which is generally on during daylight hours, as it relies on solar power.
Based on past experience, look for eggs in the first half of March, chicks in mid-April, and fledging in late June or early July. |

Note: The second chick may have hatched the afternoon of April 2nd but wasn't seen clearly until April 3rd and the CHIL forum is using April 3rd as hatch day - so I will as well. |

Cumbrian's photos - April 15, 2008 Youngu'n has been bopped a couple of times by the bigu'n. Every time s/he tries to make a move towards the food ... the other one turns and is aggressive. So s/he moved away from the aggressor up onto the front patio sticks ... which put him/her higher than the other ... and the strategy worked! |

It was a struggle but little one climbed the big sister mountain and got in a few bites. Little one snaked his way up to Mom but found himself stuck in between her legs and definitely not in the right position to get any bites. So he slowly and quietly eased on up beside sweet Sis and got a pretty good feeding. |

April 21, 2008 Lori - 6:38 am: I have to say the was one of the saddest feedings I have ever seen. florafreeek - 6:39 am: I just witnessed some bizarre behavior. For the last 15 minutes I watched Dad(?) feeding the bully. The little one was very submissive after getting pecked a few times. The bigger eaglet laid down (digesting a belly full I suspect) and the little one popped its head up ready to feed. Dad totally ignored it. Then the bully sat back up again and Dad started offering the food again. The wee one finally walked out of the bowl and right next to Dad in hopes to get in line for a few morsels and was again ignored. Finally the little one retreated back into the bowl and laid down. What's that all about?? Lori - 7:13 am: Awful wasn't it? Not sure what's going on but it sure doesn't look good for the little one. He's really looking weak to me and has knubs sticking out of his back. florafreeek - 7:32 am: Ohhh this is not good. At. All. Eaglets are up and getting fed again. It looked like Dad offered the little one a few bites but he refused them, so Dad kept feeding little piggy. Lori - 7:38 am: Finally!!!!!! Little one is up on the other side of Dad and is getting fed. Listen to him talk... He's starving. Taking the food as fast as Dad can give it to him. mimiforsix - 7:40 am: What a beautiful sight to see........the little one's being fed! I guess the little guy's getting smarter Lori; he's going to have to find ways to get fed while staying out of Big Sis's reach. Lori - 7:50 am: I know everyone says it's survival of the fittest etc...... But it's so much nicer to watch the eaglets when they get along. Not all nests have big bullies like Siszilla. mimiforsix - 4:02 pm: I just caught the end of a feeding.......Mom was feeding the little guy and Big Sis was just sitting there, with her big crop. She must have had her fill, so I thought everything was okay. Suddenly, she lumbers over and gave the little guy a few hard pecks.......really viciously! SamJennsGrandma - 7:09 pm: Pretty sure that it is the little one that gets the first bites. Lighter gray in color, right? Yes it was the little one eating first. Had quite a number of bites before sis got up and moved over to eat. Mom feeding both with sis trying to pull all the bites from her but mom is making sure the little one gets some. SamJennsGrandma - 7:15 pm: Is that the fish the little one is pulling on or is he just cleaning his beak? |

Lori - 6:22 am: Wow!!! Score another one for the little guy. I think he is finally gonna start standing up to Siszilla! He barged right in front of her and is now getting a good feeding. Little one just circled back around and is now getting fed while Miss Piggy still sits under his nose. She is starting to pick at the food herself though and I've noticed her picking up and eating alot of scraps in the nest after feedings. 7:16am and his little one's crop is stuffed full. This was at 5:00pm PT. The whole family was home and Dad had brought in a fish. I think it may be a chick record... watch the little guy take some bites all on his own. The family: Lori's photos - April 22, 2008 (older one is three weeks old) |
