"The smaller chick has learnt some strategies .... similar to what Lil in the Saanich nest did last season with his larger sibling. He crawled his way to the adult and therefore got fed .... his bigger sibling just stayed in the nest bowl for the first feed .... then the adult left and returned with another Garabaldi? ..Orange coloured ... this time Big was ready and put Lil into submission ... but again .... strategy comes into play .... smaller chick heads to the right and around to the Mom .... and waits his/her turn."

Eagle Guy reports on the IWS Forum - "May 16, Well, there was a lot of excitement on Catalina this week. A wild fire started last Thursday and came right up to the City of Avalon. Fortunately, the fire department was able to keep it from burning down the city. The wild fire burned about 4500 acres and knocked out the power to Two Harbors, where the video servers for our Catalina eagle cams are housed. We have no idea how long it will be before power is restored. We were finally able to get out in the field today to check on the nests, which were never threatened by the fire. We visited the Two Harbors, West End, Seal Rocks, and Pinnacle Rock nests and all the chicks are doing fine. Steffani will check on the Twin Rocks chicks tomorrow.
Although the web cams are not on-line, the cameras are still running because they are solar-powered. I recorded a little video at the nests to give people their eagle fix. Below are clips from the Two Harbors and West End nests. Hopefully the cameras will be on-line before banding time (last week of May), but if not, we will record the camera feeds for playback."

There's been a lot of flapping going on this week - and as much
branching as possible in a rocky nest!

I think the one on the left is K-79 on the edge of the nest
and the one on the right is K-78 "ledging"

The eaglets, especially male K-78, have been exploring the ledges around the nest -
the equivalent of branching for eaglets in a rocky nest.

Twin Rocks eaglets

These are actually the neighboring Twin Rocks eaglets (almost 14 weeks) -
and it's a really great photo and I bet Sol & Luna fly around like this!

eaglegal reported in the July 18 and July 25 updates that the fledglings are doing fine
but not posing for pictures - the only one she got looked a lot like the July 10 pic

I did learn more about the parents at Two Harbors, thanks to cdn-cdn with info from Dr. Sharpe:
male K-81 - produced at the San Francisco Zoo in 1998 and fostered into the West End nest
female K-82 - hatched in 1998 from an egg removed from the West End nest and fostered into the Pinnacle Rock nest

And here's a link to Cumbrian's Two Harbors Nest tribute
