Update from the landowner (6/10/07):
"The eaglets are getting older now, they don't eat every two hours like they did before. They have eaten this morning. Mom and dad bring small fish in for them now too and whichever is closest to the delivery gets the fish. At this point its usually one gulp and it's gone! And the babies are doing so very well I might add. I watched yesterday as they took turns with the deliveries so they are both being fed evenly."

Mother was eating in front of the eaglets -
perhaps to encourage them to grab the food from her?

Sherri: "I think I just witnessed a major lesson being given to the 'lets.
(link to full discussion and series of photos)
When I checked in, they were all standing around the prey, not doing anything with it; just standing and looking around. I believe they were waiting for Star to come in so they could teach the 'lets how to take the prey apart. I could be wrong, but that is what it seemed like. Smile They stood this way for 7-8 minutes before the tearing apart started.....it could have been longer but that is how long I was watching."
JudyB: "The Kent eaglets are 4 or 5 days younger than the one at Puget Sound, so this may be leading up to the part where the parents let the eaglets get hungry enough to serve themselves."

July 1 update from Marcia

"Names for the eaglets have been chosen by the landowners.
Names have been chosen for our 2007 Eaglets, Albert (smaller one) and Einstein (of course, the larger one). We feel since there hasn't been much aggression toward each other and they take care of each other too that they're both males. We could be totally wrong but then it wouldn't be the first time. Anyway, those names seem to fit perfectly."

Very Happy

He fledged July 15, about 6 am nest time -
cam froze for a moment, and when it came back, he was gone.
(76 days if its the older, 75 if the younger;
the landowners believe it was Einstein the older who fledged)

The fledgling is off again - I think this may be only his second flight (the first was so exciting that he may have need to rest up afterwards - and it's possible he didn't quite intend to fledge when he took his initial flight.

Fledgling is getting more comfortable with flying - and look at this great landing!
He spent the night away from the nest, arriving back around noon when parent delivered food.

"This sure is full extension of those big wings!"
The "nestling" is getting very good at flying up and down to the high branches,
and getting good height during flapping practice; I think s/he is very close to fledging.

Second eaglet fledged July 25, 7:28 am (85 or 86 days)
Update from the landowner (7/26/07):
"Success!! Both Albert and Einstein are fledglings! Albert is still cautious of the whole process and right now he's perched in a tall fir between our house and neighbors to the west of us. I tried to locate him but can only hear him.

A few minutes later I went outside and caught a glimpse of Einstein graceflully "floating" in circles around the nest tree. He's got it down now and what a privilege to see!! And, when he flies close to the tree Albert is in, Albert squawks at him. I think Einstein has been trying to entice Albert to do this ever since he learned how...

As many have seen already, mom and dad still bring food into the nest and if neither eaglet is there, it helps teach the new "flyer's" those difficult target accuracy manuevers; grabbing branches where you want and when you want to land successfully. Kind of like the "patting your head rubbing your stomach" thing to strengthen coordination. For so long they've only had to walk around, squawk, open their mouths to have food "placed gently on their tongue", push sticks over the edge and flap a bunch.. God bless them both. Ah-ha, mom just came in with lunch."
