2009 Eaglet Information Table

Last Updated January 3, 2010

the symbol ~ is used to mean about or approximately
times are local time at the nest

If the cam doesn't look into the nest bowl, the hatch date for the first eaglet is based on the behavior of the parents and that of subsequent eaglets is based partly on an assumption of 2-3 days between hatchings and partly on the number of days between sighting of the first chick and sighting of subsequent chicks; nests may only be checked once a week after fledging, so the fledgling may have been around for several days after it was last seen on cam by us.

At least one eaglet was still being fed by the adults at the nest at the end of October, when s/he was 25 weeks old. We haven't seen both together since early September, but some observers think it was not always the same chick that was seen in October.

fledge may not have been intentional - someone saw him caught by a gust of wind - but he'd been doing a lot of flying back and forth across the nest, so was probably close. He returned around 11 am the next day.

NOTES

BC - Delta 1: June 4 - Older eaglet fell from nest when part of nest gave way, and died from the fall.

BC - Delta 1: July 30 - A large branch broke off the nest tree (possibly because of extreme heat the previous few days) and startled remaining eaglet "Bandit" into flying out of the opposite side of the nest; he was found on the ground unable to fly, so was taken to O.W.L. for a health check and introduction to flight areas where he could develop his flying skills

BC - Hornby: May 11 - Younger eaglet Echo became stuck to female's feathers, eventually fell when female flew from nest; not sure of exact cause of death.

BC - Sidney: July 4 - Youngest eaglet Tiny/Tink was knocked off a branch by the middle eaglet; he(?) hadn't done much flapping so was likely a week away from an intentional fledge when he inadvertantly fledged; he made his way to the "old" nest on July 13.

CO - Fort St. Vrain: April 17 - One of the adults was apparently lost in a bad snowstorm, and all three chicks subsequently died, presumably of exposure, when the remain parent had to leave them to hunt. Update: both parents were seen at the nest subsequently; there's now a theory that one or both parents ate a poisoned prairie dog or other contaminated food, which affected their ability to care for the chicks - and/or that they fed something contaminated to the chicks.
